Auditory Processing Disorder in Children - An Often Overlooked Learning Disability

Have you ever felt that your kid falls short at listening? He could hear what you said but didn’t follow it?  If this happens often, it could be a sign of Auditory Processing Disorder in your Children.

APD is type of learning disability, which is commonly overlooked by the parents. The Auditory processing disorder (APD), also known as central auditory processing disorder (CAPD), is particularly a hearing problem.

Kids with this problem can't follow what they hear because of lack of proper co-ordination between their ears and brain.

Normally the brain processes sounds in fractions of seconds and seamlessly. In fact, people quickly interpret and respond to what they hear. But it’s not the case with the kids suffering with APD.

They respond slow or may not answer to question being asked, they might listen something else, for them there is confusion between sounds and words The common symptoms seen in kids suffering with APD usually are as following:

·                     It’s not easy for them to follow spoken directions

·                     First reply to anyone is”What?”
·                     Easily distracted, by any background/loud or sudden noises
·                     Difficulty with listening, reading and spelling
·                     Difficulty in recognizing and interpreting sounds
·                     Struggle with oral study problems
·                     Not able to follow conversations
·                     Poor music understanding
·                     Not easy to learn songs or nursery rhymes
·                     Trouble with memory
As parents you need to understand that kids with CAPD have to work harder in comparison to other kids for sustaining normal day to day life.
It’s better to get proper medication and get your children one-to-one tutoring, which will really help him to overcome this problem.
